Opening Prayer

Let us recite a heartfelt act of sorrow, envisioning the scene of Calvary:

Jesus Crucified about to die, and the Most Holy Virgin, who contemplates her divine Son and thinks of us sinners, and prays for humanity.

Let us ask St. Paul the grace of making the Way of the Cross well.  St. Paul is the great preacher of Jesus Crucified.  In one of his letters he wrote: "For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified"(1Cor. 2:2).

May he stir up those same feelings!

And let us invoke the assistance of Mary, the sorrowful Mother.  May she help us feel sorrow for sin and above all inspire us to resolve to live a holy life.

Let us pray.  Lord, look upon us.  For our sake you, our Lord Jesus Christ unhesitatingly suffered betrayal into the hands of the wicked and underwent the torment of the cross.

My most merciful Jesus, humbly, I ask pardon with all my heart for my sins, because they are an offense to your infinite goodness.  I resolve to not offend you and to love you above all things until death.

Stabat Mater:

Holy Mother, pierce me through,

In my heart, each wound renew,

Of my Savior Crucified.

At the cross her station keeping,

Stood the mournful Mother weeping,

Close to Jesus to the last.
